Why MOQ exists at all

A seating factory does not enjoy MOQs; it tolerates them. Every model changeover means retooling assembly lines, cutting new fabric lots and reprogramming equipment. The MOQ spreads that fixed cost across enough units to keep the per-piece price you were quoted. This is why the same chair can carry a $200 MOQ-set price and a $145 price at 500 pieces — you are not being overcharged at small quantity, you are simply paying the changeover yourself.

What is a realistic MOQ for office seating?

For mesh and upholstered task chairs from the Foshan and Lecong manufacturing belt, typical structures look like this:

• Per model per colour: 50–100 pieces is common for catalogue models already in production.
• Per mixed container: the real number that matters — most factories accept a 1×20ft container mixed across models, which for seating is roughly 150–250 chairs depending on size and disassembly.
• Colour / fabric changes: often treated as a new MOQ even for the same model, because the fabric is cut to order.

If a supplier quotes a single rigid MOQ with no mix flexibility, they are either a very large factory with no shortage of orders, or a middleman padding the number. Both are worth knowing before negotiation.

The five MOQ questions to ask

• Can models be mixed inside one container? This single question determines whether you can launch a range or must bet on one model.
• Is the MOQ per colour or per model? Best case: per order. Worst case: per colour per model.
• What is the price ladder? Ask for pricing at MOQ, at 2× and at 3×. The curve tells you the factory's real incentive structure.
• What is the repeat-order MOQ? Repeat orders skip changeover costs; some factories cut the repeat MOQ in half. This matters more than the first MOQ for long-term margin.
• What happens between MOQ and delivery? Who inspects, who loads, and what evidence you receive. A low MOQ with no inspection is more expensive than a higher MOQ with QC.
